Waste Disposal Sites

Household batteries can be placed in designated collection containers at all three Waste Disposal Sites, as well as the Municipal Office. 

Approved batteries include single-use (AA, AAA, C, D, 6 and 9 volt), lithium, button cell and rechargeable. 

Recycling facilities are available for approved blue box recyclable materials. 

Accepted materials include:

• Glass: clear or coloured jars
• Cardboard: corrugated, box board, boxed beverage containers
• Paper: envelopes, paperbacks, magazines and catalogues, printer and fine paper, newspaper and flyers
• Tin and plastics: food and beverage containers, pop cans, plastic bottles, tubs and lids, plastic clam shell containers. Plastic numbered 1 to 5 and 7.

Through the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA), the Municipality offers waste electrical and electronics equipment recycling free of charge.

Accepted items include:

• Display devices, drones, home audio/video systems, desktop computers
• Home theatre in-a-box (HTB) systems, cameras & security cameras, vehicle audio/video systems (aftermarket), portable computers
• Personal/portable audio/video systems, musical instruments & recording equipment, floor standing printers & printer cartridges, video gaming systems & peripherals 
• Computer peripherals (routers, cables, chargers, USB), IT and telecom equipment (hard drives, servers, microfilm readers, binding machines, postage franking machines & check filler machines), desktop printing/multi-function devices, 3D printers & printer cartridges, phones (telephones, cellular & smart phone devices, pagers)

The County of Bruce hosts Household Hazardous and Special Waste Collection events free of charge for residents of Bruce County. 

Commercial, agricultural and industrial wastes, PCBs, ammunitions and flares will not be accepted. Containers with a volume of 30 litres or less will be accepted; however, containers will not be emptied and returned. 

Attendees must remain in their vehicle with waste materials in their open trunk only for unloading.

St. Edmunds Waste Disposal Site (71 McArthur Road, Tobermory)
July 8, 2023 - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Eastnor Waste Disposal Site (1252 West Road, Lion's Head)
August 19, 2023 - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In 2012, the Municipality implemented a program to divert mattresses from its Waste Disposal Sites. While there is still a cost to dispose of mattresses, the tipping fee of $25.00 per unit covers the cost to transport the mattresses to a facility where they are cut apart for the purpose of collecting the raw materials found inside. These materials, including cotton, polyester, felt, wood and metal, are then sent to various companies to give them a second life.

Give your Styrofoam a second chance at life! 

Residents can recycle bulky Styrofoam free of charge through a program with Second Wind Recycling. 

Styrofoam must be clean, dry and rigid, like the packaging from electronics and appliances. 

Please do not include dirty Styrofoam, packing peanuts, black Styrofoam and take-out containers. 

To help build a culture of waste reduction, re-use, and sharing, re-use buildings have been erected within each site. 

Acceptance of items is at the Attendant's discretion. 

Through the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA), the Municipality is a collector of on-road and off-road tires. This program is offered free of charge. 

Please visit the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority's website to find other free tire disposal locations. These locations are typically car dealerships, vehicle repair shops and tire sales centres.
