Be Bear Wise

With careful management of your waste, you can reduce the chance of attracting bears to your property. Store waste and recyclables in a bear-resistant container, secure shed or garage. You are also encouraged to visit a Waste Disposal Site, especially if concerned about materials being left for collection overnight or for a number of hours.

Bear Wise Tips

  • Put garbage out on the morning of garbage day, not the night before
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors
  • Thoroughly clean outdoor grills after use
  • Fill bird feeders only through the winter months
  • Do not put meat, fish or sweet food in your composter
  • Keep meat scraps in the freezer until garbage collection day
  • Pick up all ripe fruit off trees and remove vegetables and fallen fruit from the ground
  • Use electric fencing to protect valuable trees, orchards, vegetable and berry patches

Bear-Resistant Garbage Bins

Bear-resistant garbage bins are designed to limit wildlife access to waste, helping reduce human–wildlife interactions and keeping both residents and animals safe. These bins feature secure, locking lids that are difficult for bears to open when used correctly. Ensuring lids are fully closed at all times helps deter bears from residential areas, protects property, and supports responsible waste management within the community.
