The Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) were passed by the Ontario Legislature with the goal of creating standards to improve accessibility across the Province to achieve a fully accessible Ontario by 2025.  Approximately 20% of people in Ontario have some type of disability.

The Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula (MNBP) is committee to providing quality goods and services which are accessible to all persons that we serve.  We have taken many initiatives to foster an inclusive community by identifying and removing barriers to ensure that our goods and services are provided in a way that respects the dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity for all people.

The AODA become law in 2005.  It sets out accessibility requirements that an organization must meet in the areas of Customer Service, Information and Communications, Employment, Transportation and the Design of Public Spaces.  These are called "standards".  The Information and Communications, Employment, Transportation and the Design of Public Spaces standards were all combined under the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulations (IASR).  As of July 1, 2016, Customer Service has been added to the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation.

In December 2012, the IASR was amended to include accessibility standards for the built environment in relation to the Design of Public Spaces.  The standard applies to new construction and major changes to existing open space features.  The Municipality has already begun to include this Standard in all works taking place in the Municipality and in the Procurement By-law.

On January 1, 2015, the Ontario Building Code was amended to include the Accessible Built Environment Standards to enhance accessibility in newly constructed buildings and existing buildings that are to be extensively renovated.

Training

MNBP staff, contractors and volunteers are required to complete training with regard to Customer Service, Information and Communications, Employment, Transportation and the Design of Public Spaces Standards.  These standards are now all combined under the IASR.

Feedback

MNBP welcomes public input.  It helps identify areas where changes need to be considered and ways in which we can improve the delivery of accessible goods and services.  Feedback may be provided by telephone, in person, in writing or by email.

Accessible Format

If you require an accessible format or communication support, please contact Cathy Addison, Deputy Clerk/Accessibility Coordinator at (519) 793-3522, X236 or email to cathya.nbp@amtelecom.net.  Let us know how we can best meet your needs.
